A Nigerian military court sitting in Abuja has sentenced one of its senior officers, Major General Umaru Mohammed, to seven years in prison without bail.

The Chief Military Judge who presided over the trial, Major General James Myam found the army chief guilty of 14 of the 18 crimes he was accused of in the case.

As reported by TRTAFRIKA newspaper, the military court requested General James to return 2,178,900 dollars and 1.65 billion naira to the Nigerian Army Assets Company as required.

Before the decision, General Mohamed was detained in a military prison in Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja for some years before his decision. The lawyer defending the defendant, Lekan Ojo, requested that the convicted soldier be sent to Kuje Correctional Facility, but the military judges refused to accept this request of his lawyer.

Major General Mohammed was previously the head of the Nigerian Army Assets Company some years ago.
